Wrath of the Titans trailer is now up, I was brought on very early on to do creature designs on this. The designs look like they have gone through allot of different hands since my first designs,now very tame compared to what I came up with including along the way someone adding that awuful jaw shape from the Kraken to the Chimera. looking foward to seeing more though.

Some time ago I mentioned working on the new Machine Head album cover. PLEA FOR HELP

A plea for help, this is SAM, one of the many foxes rescued and cared for by a local ( and the only North East ) animal sanctuary. The place is run by Kim and Alan, its been going for over 10 years. Just two people that take on animals in need, they make no profit and are only funded by the publics donations. Over 150 animals are cared for. They are under threat of closure! , hard times, bankers pulling overdrafts and so on. Swamp Ape Studios has been hard at work for the past several months creating an arsenal of Special Visual Effects shots for the upcoming Machine Head video Locust, headed by Director Mike Sloat for Roadrunner Records.

Swamp Ape Founder/Producer Von Kreep, was hired during pre-production by Art Director Paul Gerrard (Battle: LA) as VFX Producer. Von brought the creative team together to give Paul's nightmarish 2D artwork into terrifying three dimensional life . The entire digital workload including; CG modeling/surfacing, animating a swarm of locusts, compositing, and much more is being handled by LA based VFX Supervisor/Artist Adam Lima.

UNTO THE LOCUST FINAL ART

UNTO THE LOCUST is the cover art for the latest MACHINE HEAD album. From a concept brief by the band exploring imagery derived from the metaphor of the locust. A metaphor for a type of person, being, friend, love government or religion that comes into your life.

From the outset it was a very interesting project to take on, Rob Flynn of Machine Head was pushing for an Art Direction as opposed to a cover. Stemming from the cover, colour, texture, tone , all wrapped up and spawning from the cover. It was a great experience, rather than see it as a CD cover, I approached it from a creature design point of view, the same way I approach any movie designs. Mixed with the mood and art direction that would come from say a gallery piece or key frame. Then translated this through to all the pages, text , logos for the band . I have nothing but admiration for Robb and the band, a real creative powerhouse of minds and allot of fun to work for.

We went through a number of design changes , playing with the balance of 'real' locust features with horror elements, human elements. Some designs favoured more human arms, eyes, limb proportions. Some pure skinny locusts, mass of locusts and so on. Some shadowed creatures, wide shots , close ups. We felt this shot gave a glimpse of what was coming , has the right balance of disgusting texture with locust elements and 'horror' features.

Iv recently been taking this Art Direction and design and using it to help in the creation of the music video. Its going to be allot of fun seeing this creature come alive. Will update with images when I can, taking designs from sketch to photoshop, to 3d model ( physical ) and beyond.

It was a real rough workup I did for a Lucifer character Im working on. Im suprised they released this as its just a rough but as its just a sneak peak, I guess its ok.

Here it is, my lifes been on hold for while untill I got this finnished. Glad I did it though, was allot of fun playing with the designs and going mental on the detail.

This is by far the largest image Ive done, in terms of time/ content and indeed file size 10300 x 5050 pixels. Approx 60 hours to complete. The image is all about setting the scene and composing a strong mood , one significatley different than any of the previous incarnations of the franchise. Iv re-designed the look and feel of Ed-209 ( giving a harder edge and miltary feel, cops, riot police, punks. Going for a much more gritty, visualy violent and manic feel overall. When it came to Robocp himself, I played around with sleek designs ( but sleek to me, felt too much like IronMan so I dropped that idea), massive mech vesions and so on. I settled with a throw back to the original but with much more outer machanical elements, as a bare bones , hardend , military machine.
Iv purposely left the helmet off in this version, I wanted the human face to balance the added mass of machine. I may do another version later, with the helmet and play around with some more design elements.

In the next few days I hope to release an image iv been working on, on and off for over a month. Approx 60 hours or so on one image ! For some that might be an average time, for me thats a lifetime. My paintings usualy take a couple of days at the most. Prob because I dont sleep when Im working. Anyway, since Jose Padilha ( fantastic choice , really loking forward to what he creates )has been announced to direct the new remake, Iv been inspired to do my own version of all the elements I loved from the first film. Iv been re-working everything, Ed 209, Robocop, punks and so on. Anybody who knows me personnaly knows Im a little bit nuts over that film so its no suprise this has been on the cards for while.

My Gerrardart site has had some problems recently. Someone or something has been targeting my site and adding malware, bastards . So now when you search for gerrardart in google it says ' 'This site may harm your computer'. I have recently wiped clean the old site and all the files and completely redone the website from scratch. SO , all new clean Gerrardart.com!. Unfortunatey google search is still registering my old site and disclaiming 'This site may harm your computer'. Plus Firefox uses data from google and determines if a site is safe or not. Not much I can do about that Im afraid untill google catches up on itself and sees the new site, whenever that may be.

As the BLA hype wagon is starting to roll Im seeing more of the aliens and ships in the adverts. I havent see the film, and only saw real early VFX shots and 3dmodels of the aliens and such last year. I saw the alien hover craft for the first time in tiny TV spot yesturday, what they have done with it looks awesome. Iv been on a nastalga trip, looking at the old skecthes for the ships, way back in 2008.Definetly the best experience Iv ever had working on a movie, a testament to Johns vision .

For legal reasons , and so that it doesnt spoil the film I cant show allot of the designs I did for Battle La. Which is a shame as I have some really fucked up images Id want to share, biomech gone mental. However, little pieces of art are starting to show up in magazines and website now that the film is getting close to being released. I have no controll over what art is shown, but seeing as these are for public viewing now Iv put them in my gallery and here....

These where very loose ideas for machine shapes and head designs. I liked the open face structure as well as the enclosed form , it had allot of potential for hidden machine parts and surreal movement.

What started off as a challenge thrown down by my good friend Edward Fox to do my version of a CYBERMAN from Doctor Who has grown into an obsessive project. I started to look into the history of the character and took the design right back to the roots. I hope to continue this with more elaborate incarnations and further more explore more characters from the shows history.

If anyone has any favourite characters that would make an interesting update challenge, let me know.

I saw the centre image of self clear as day, however the old men to the side where in my perifial vision, not too clear. Iv done my best to recreate the shape and details of the old guards. I got the feeling that these two twins come together to create the self. Perhaps ?

Another medative WED image, I saw people with hips for heads. Alien insect features. At first a circular inner face , then it opened. The centre of the creature was open, moist , pulsing.

Rough character design I did . I wanted to create a creature/machine that looked like it was constantly unfolding/ perhaps evolving when it moved. All its limbs would snap into place , somewhat primitive but beautiful at the same time.

Every Wed I take part in a group meditation with close friends. I have asked to recieve an image/creature on this night, that is to be illustrated. I hope to sketch these creature in the following weeks.

Here is week 01. I saw the shape more than anytthing, the energy flow from the Cundalini to the third eye chakra.

THE ELEPHANT GOD

On a trip to some place I forgot the name of I came across a small temple. It was Ganesh the India deity, the guard who had his head chopped off and replaced with an elephants head. Anyway, I’ve been to many temples before while in India but this one was different.

A small room aprox 6 meters in diameter with the colorful wooden Ganesh statue in the centre. As soon as I stepped inside I felt something just above my stomach, as if it lifted my body slightly out of synch. This feeling didn’t go until I left the temple.

Now I presume it was energy, my friends all feel energy in certain places, all talk about it like it’s the norm. However I’ve never experienced it before so it was a shock.

6 weeks later it was Ganesh day and I was in the streets of Pune waving a flag, in the centre of festival crazies. Buts I guess that’s another blog.

DELI and my balls

Deli was amazing, I got a flight from PUNE to Deli then a driver to Agra to Visit the Taj Mahal on the saturday then came back on the sunday . Now about 4 years ago a found an ornament in a small shop in the Lake District Uk. About the size of a cricket ball, deep red and gold, looked like wood and copper, I thought it was medieval. I love it, dont know why, its just odd and creepy in that I havent a clue what it is, Ive never seen one since...

Then in a small shop In Agra/India, low and behold on the bottom shelf in a mass of wooden elephants is the same ball but green where the other was red. They guy who sold it to me didnt speak much English, all I got was that it was made from Camel bone.

So now I have two balls :) Awesome.

As you all know the Butterflysoldiers concept is long overdue. India is indeed the perfect place to write the book, and create the illustrations. Apologies for the lack of updates once again. Believe me I did start to create a number of illustrations , then I was contacted by a Film Director friend of mine. Who is working on a couple of new movies and wanted my help, I read the script and could not turn this down. So am busy creating a mass of concept art for this, and loving every minute. It's creepy, scary, disturbed and unique for sure.

So Butterflysodiers once again is on the backburner, hopefully not for too long. I will be in India for another few months so plenty of time yet.

Paris vs Chuck Norris

Day four in Paris, I'm here for another 4 days before I fly to India.
Had endless meetings for the last three days which actually where allot of fun as I got to meet some really great people. Very friendly, very helpful and considering they dont really know me they are putting alot of faith in me, I hope I can live upto it.

So Paris.. mmmm, not to my liking at all. Today was my first full day in Paris to wander, I got the metro to Paris centre then walked for hours and hours taking in the site. Went to the Lourve , spending more endless hours walking and my conculsion. Why is Paris so obsessed with its aristocratal history. Monuments of the rich built by and for the rich, really not my cup of tea at all. I'm going to try and get out to the old medievel towns of the next couple of days, Ive wanted to visit Rouen so hopefully I can work out how to get there.

I'm staying in Montruie, theres no alternative / industrial night clubs ? wheres all the underground music?.

Infact unlike say Germany where body art and tattoos are common place as a form of self expression Paris is totaly void of such beauty

As soon as a stepped foot in the centre of Paris a Gimmy pounced. A skinny well dressed man from Kenya, he grabbed my arm and began to wind a bracelat around my wrist while trying to make conversation. Told me I was a good looking man, I look like Chuck Noris apparently, maybe its the beared and black clothes, then he asked for 20 Euros. I gave him 4 for the sheer nerve and wished him luck. The real Chuck wouldnt have let things get the far, just a swift roundouse to the head as soon as he grabbed my arm. He should count himself lucky.

Another gimmy pretended to find a gold ring near where I stood, gave it me then walked away. Only briefly before returning and asking for money , WTF! This pissed me off, more cons, I gave him the ring and said buy some with this and leave me the fuck alone, he walked away.

So tmrw, maybe the Effel Tower followed by a nice meel somewhere , 'table for one please' gets a bit boring after a while.

Lets hope Paris opens up to me in the next few days, and shows me the 'magic' of Paris.

INDIA , the book, the rain, the heat, the job.

As of 27th June I shall be on my way to India to teach art within computer games development. Recruit and train artists in Pune/India.

I have created this blogsite to keep track of this trip, places of interest, images, photos and art development.

With such a wondeful place, dence with forests, culture, spiritulism, drenched in monsoons and heat, its a perfect place to finnish the butterflysoldiers book.
